Who is CLU?

We are a group of staff working in the legislature organizing to better our working conditions through forming a union.

We make critical contributions to state policy, but many of us lack secure rights and protections in the workplace, struggle to pay high housing and other costs, and face increasing uncertainty about our futures.

It is the mission of CLU to uplift, protect, and create a safe and just environment for legislative staff.

Learn more below about the core values that guide every action of CLU.

Respect and Inclusivity

We are committed to maintaining an inclusive, safe, and accountable environment. Members are expected to treat one another with dignity and respect. Our zero-tolerance policy prohibits behavior based on any protected characteristic under California law. Disagreements must be handled through respectful dialogue, and all concerns about harm or harassment will be addressed through a fair, transparent process.

Mutual Aid and Solidarity

Organizing can be challenging, but we face it together by offering one another emotional, logistical, and strategic support every step of the way. No member will ever stand alone, and retaliation of any kind against those participating in our efforts will not be tolerated. Our solidarity doesn’t stop with this group — we’re part of a broader labor movement fighting for dignity, fairness, and collective power. When we lift each other up, our entire movement grows stronger.

Collective Responsibility

Every member plays an important role in strengthening our organizing effort through participation, support, and active listening. We make decisions together, guided by transparency and shared democratic input. By uplifting and encouraging one another, we ensure that no one feels isolated in this work. Together, we build a stronger, more united movement.

Political Neutrality

Our organizing effort is centered on improving workplace conditions, fair treatment, and workers’ rights. These values unite all of us. To stay focused and strong together, members set aside personal political beliefs and keep our discussions rooted in what best serves the staff and the union. Avoiding partisan politics helps us maintain a mission-driven, collaborative environment where everyone feels included. When we stay united around our shared goals, our collective power grows.

Confidentiality and Security

Because union organizing involves sensitive information, members agree to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all discussions, plans, and member identities. Information about organizing efforts may not be shared with non-members, management, or anyone not authorized to receive it. These safeguards protect both the effort and the safety of everyone involved.

Continuous Learning and Growth

We are committed to growing together as a union by continuously learning about workers’ rights, labor history, and effective organizing strategies. By offering constructive feedback and reflecting on our shared experiences, we strengthen both our movement and each other. As challenges arise and circumstances evolve, we will adapt our approach with openness, collaboration, and curiosity — always striving to build a stronger and more empowered organizing effort.
